Dr. Wei Gao’s research focuses on the characterization of novel biomarkers with diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic values in head and neck cancer. His main research interest is to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy in head and neck cancer. He is also interested in exploring the intrinsic pathway and tumor microenvironment employed by tumour cells to escape immunosurveillance. In addition, he focuses on the translational use of FDA-approved drug in head and neck cancer treatment. He has identified some druggable targets with diagnostic and prognostic value for head and neck cancer. He has also characterized cancer stem cells which confer chemoresistance. His research team has established a serial of models to investigate the efficiency of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy aiming to overcome intrinsic and acquired resistance to main treatment regimens in head and neck cancer. Dr. Gao serves as the editor of Frontiers in Oncology and an invited reviewer for peer-reviewed journals. He has been awarded international prices such as “Excellent Article Award” and “Best Paper Award” in Guangzhou International Symposium on Oncology.
