Biography

Professor Chung graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 2004 and received his surgical training at the Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital. He obtained his fellowship qualification in 2011 and the Master of Surgery (HKU) in 2017. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor in Paediatric Surgery and Assistant Dean (Alumni Engagement) of HKUMed.

Professor Chung has concentrated his clinical experience and research on paediatric hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases. He has authored 3 book chapters and published 125 articles in top ranking journals including the Lancet, The Journal of Hepatology and The Journal of Paediatric Surgery. He conducted the first regional multi-center study in paediatric surgery in 2016 and was awarded the Best Original Paper by the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. As a recognition of his publication experience, Dr Chung was appointed as the editorial board member of several international journals and he has become the Associate Editor of the Journal of Paediatric Surgery Open since 2021. He is the PI/Co-PI of several RGC-GRF and HMRF funded projects with a total funding amount over HKD 5.4M. Besides, Dr Chung is a Co-I of a 5-year Theme-Based Research Scheme project which focuses on translational research in biliary atresia with funding amount over HKD 56M. Internationally, he has a close collaboration with multiple renowned centres and is serving as a board member in various international associations including the Pacific Association of Paediatric Surgeons and the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgery. He has presented over 70 abstracts and delivered more than 40 invited lectures world-wide. Professor Chung is the supervisor/mentor of post-graduate students in HKU. Because of his outstanding achievement, he has received two prestigious surgical awards: the GB Ong Travelling Fellowship (2018) and the American College of Surgeons Carlos Pellegrini Traveling Fellowship (2019).

Professor Chung is a pioneer in minimally invasive surgery and highly experienced in laparoscopic neonatal surgery. He has performed the first paediatric laparoscopic liver resection in town. In 2023, his team received the Outstanding Team Award by the Hospital Authority. Besides clinical work, he is heavily involved in medical education. In recognition of his excellence in teaching, Professor Chung was awarded the Faculty Teaching Medal in 2023. In addition to undergraduate teaching, he is also an accredited trainer and examiner of the Paediatric Surgery Board in Hong Kong.

Professor Chung is currently Deputy Chief in Paediatric Surgery at Queen Mary Hospital; Person-in-Charge of Surgical Oncology service at Hong Kong Children’s Hospital; Council member and Chairman of Scientific Committee of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong; Vice president of the Hong Kong Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology; Hepatology and Nutrition and Secretary General of the Asian Surgical Association.
