Biography

Professor Michael Hsin is a graduate from Cambridge University, United Kingdom. He underwent Basic Surgical Training with the St Mary’s Hospital Basic Surgical Rotation in London UK, and was a research fellow at Harvard Medical School/ Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA. He returned to London for cardiothoracic surgery specialist training at the Royal Brompton, London Chest and St Bartholomew’s Hospitals. After a spell as Clinical Assistant Professor, Department of Surgery CUHK, he undertook lung transplant training and research at the Toronto General Hospital/ Toronto University, Canada. In 2013, he returned to Hong Kong, initially as Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery of the University of Hong Kong University, and later as Associate Consultant in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. He is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, the University of Hong Kong.

Professor Hsin is a specialist cardiothoracic surgeon. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong, and the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine (Surgery). He is a member of the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (USA). Dr Hsin has served as Scientific Committee member of professional societies such as the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh/College of Surgeon Scientific Congress and the Congress of Asian Society of Transplantation. He is an examiner of the Joint Specialty Fellowship Examination in Cardiothoracic Surgery. Professor Hsin’s current and past editorial duties include Editorial Board member of The Journal Of Thoracic And Cardiovascular Surgery and Thoracic Cancer; Associate Editor of Respirology Case Reports; and past Section Editor (Thoracic Surgery) of the Journal of Thoracic Disease.

Professor Hsin has focused his clinical interest in the treatment of benign and malignant diseases of the chest, with particular emphasis on lung cancer. His research interests include lung cancer, lung transplantation and metabolomics. He has over 100 publications, including important journals such as the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, the Annals of Surgery, the Journal of Heart Lung Transplantation and Nature.
