G.B. Ong Travelling Fellowship, G.B. Ong Visiting Professorship and G.B. Ong Visiting Fellowship in Surgery

Introduction

To commemorate Professor Tan Sri G.B. Ong's retirement from the Chair of Surgery at the University of Hong Kong in 1982, as well as his active practice in 2000, the G.B. Ong Fund raised through generous donations from his friends, colleagues, current and former staff of the Department was established. The fund is dedicated to support educational and training activities that promote knowledge exchange and development of surgery including the G.B. Ong Travelling Fellowship, the G.B. Ong Visiting Professorship and G.B. Ong Visiting Fellowship in Surgery. The administration of the G.B. Ong Fund was entrusted to a Board of Governors comprising Professor Simon Law (Convenor and in the capacity of Chairperson of Department of Surgery, School of Clinical Medicine, HKUMed and Chief of Service of Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital, Hospital Authority), Professor Jason Cheung (in the capacity of Chairperson of Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology, School of Clinical Medicine, HKUMed), Professor Edward Lai, Dr. Lau Chi-Hung (in the capacity of Chairman of COC Surgery, Hospital Authority), Dr. Louis Lee, Professor Leong Che-Hung, and Professor Tiffany Wong. The Board of Governors evaluates and discusses for selection of deserving candidates for these Fellowships.

G.B. Ong Travelling Fellowship (Outgoing)

The G.B. Ong Travelling Fellowship is a prestigious award that enables promising surgeons, preferably permanent Hong Kong residents, to visit leading overseas centres in their area of special interest. Recipients of the Fellowship are expected to actively participate in the centres’ academic and clinical activities, as well as to learn from overseas experts to benefit the Hong Kong community.

 

G.B. Ong Visiting Professorship and G.B. Ong Visiting Fellowship in Surgery (Incoming)

The G.B. Ong Visiting Professorship and G.B. Ong Visiting Fellowship in Surgery is open to surgeons from overseas medical centres to visit our Department for the purpose of teaching, research or training.  The duties of incoming visiting fellows will be delegated by the respective division chiefs and approved by the Department Chairperson.

Selection Criteria

The Selection Committee will take into account the following aspects for selecting candidates:

  • Academic inclination background
  • Post MBBS training or surgical training or equivalent
  • Institute reference from the Head of the Department or HCE or equivalent
  • Experience in clinical studies, research, teaching and publication would be an advantage

Submission of application Annually, every 31 January Biannually, every 31 March and 30 September

Remuneration

HKD30,000 as reimbursement of registration fees for overseas surgical centers, travel and accommodation costs.

The cost of accommodation for a maximum period of 3 months in Hong Kong.

Duties of successful candidate  1. To visit 2 - 4 overseas surgical centres over 2 weeks to give lectures and participate in the centres’ activities. 

2. Submission of a report 2 months after completion of the Fellowship.

3. To give presentations at a scientific meeting of The College of Surgeons of Hong Kong and/or Department of Surgery of The University of Hong Kong and The Chinese University of Hong Kong.
1. Duties to be delegated by the respective Division Chiefs and approved by the Department Chairperson during the visit in the Department of Surgery. 

2. Submission of a report 2 months after completion of the Fellowship.
