Biography

Professor Chung graduated from the University of Hong Kong in 2004 and completed his surgical training in the Department of Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital. He obtained Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 2011 and a Master of Surgery (HKU) in 2017. He is currently Clinical Associate Professor and Assistant Dean (Alumni Engagement) at the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong (HKUMed).  He is also the Vice President (Internal) of the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong.


Professor Chung’s clinical practice and research focus on paediatric hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal diseases. He has authored three book chapters and published 145 articles in high-impact journals, including The Lancet, Journal of Hepatology, and Journal of Pediatric Surgery. In 2016 he led the first regional multicentre study in paediatric surgery and was awarded the Best Original Paper by the College of Surgeons of Hong Kong. In recognition of his academic contributions, he serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. He has been Executive Editor of Journal of Pediatric Surgery (the highest-ranked journal in paediatric surgery) since 2025 and Associate Editor of Journal of Pediatric Surgery Open since 2021.  Professor Chung is the Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator of multiple RGC-GRF and HMRF-funded projects, securing total funding exceeding HK$5.4 million. He is also a Co-Investigator on a five-year Theme-Based Research Scheme project on translational research in biliary atresia, with funding exceeding HK$56 million.

Internationally, he collaborates closely with leading centres and serves on the boards of several global associations, including the Pacific Association of Pediatric Surgeons and the World Federation of Associations of Pediatric Surgeons. He has presented more than 70 abstracts and delivered over 40 invited lectures worldwide. At HKU he supervises and mentors postgraduate students. For his outstanding achievements he has received two prestigious travelling fellowships: the GB Ong Travelling Fellowship (2018) and the American College of Surgeons Carlos Pellegrini Traveling Fellowship (2019).

Professor Chung is a pioneer in minimally invasive paediatric surgery and is highly experienced in laparoscopic neonatal procedures. He performed the first paediatric laparoscopic liver resection in Hong Kong. His team has received the Outstanding Team Award from Queen Mary Hospital and the Hospital Authority on two occasions since 2023.

Beyond clinical practice, he is deeply engaged in medical education. In recognition of his teaching excellence, he was awarded the Faculty Teaching Medal in 2023. In addition to undergraduate teaching, he is Programme Director and Examiner of the Paediatric Surgery Board in Hong Kong.

Deputy Chief of Paediatric Surgery, Queen Mary Hospital; Person-in-Charge of Surgical Oncology Service, Hong Kong Children’s Hospital; Vice President, Hong Kong Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition; Secretary General, Asian Association of Pediatric Surgeons.
