Biography

Professor Tiffany Cho-Lam Wong is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Department of Surgery, Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine, The University of Hong Kong. She is a Fellow of the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine, the Hong Kong College of Surgeons, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and the American College of Surgeons. She holds a Master of Surgery from The University of Hong Kong (2021), with a thesis on liver transplantation for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). She undertook a visiting scholarship at the Division of Transplant, University of California San Francisco (UCSF) in 2015.

Her research focuses on two areas: (1) expanding the pool of liver grafts for transplantation through management of small-for-size syndrome in living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) and the use of extended-criteria grafts including hepatitis B core antibody–positive and severely steatotic livers; and (2) optimising outcomes of HCC through the application of LDLT and multimodal bridging therapies, in particular stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT). Her work has pioneered the world’s first prospective study of SBRT as bridging therapy for HCC waitlist candidates and has prospectively evaluated a reduced graft-to-recipient weight ratio of 0.6% as the minimum threshold for adult LDLT, challenging longstanding donor selection criteria.

Professor Wong has published numerous peer-reviewed articles, with original contributions appearing in Annals of Surgery, Hepatology, Journal of Hepatology, JAMA Surgery, Annals of Surgical Oncology, and Liver Transplantation, among others. She is the principal investigator of five General Research Fund grants from the Research Grants Council, Hong Kong SAR, and one SK Yee Medical Foundation Fund, with co-investigator role in a Theme-based Research Scheme and additional Health and Medical Research Fund and “San-ming” project of Medicine. She serves as Associate Editor for American Journal of Transplantation, Transplant International, and Annals of Hepatology, and is a reviewer for Hepatology, Annals of Surgery, Journal of Hepatology, and Annals of Surgical Oncology, among more than 25 international journals.

Professor Wong has received numerous international accolades. She is the recipient of the Rising Star Award of the International Liver Transplant Society (ILTS) (2019), the Carlos A. Pellegrini Fellowship of the American College of Surgeons (2020), the Emerging Leader Lectureship of the Asian Pacific Digestive Week Federation (2023), and was named one of three women worldwide recognised as Inspiring Members of the ILTS on International Women's Day (2024). She received multiple Best Oral Awards at congresses of the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA) and the Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (A-PHPBA), and the Liver Transplant and/or Hepatobiliary Surgery Fellow Award of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) in 2016.

At the international level, Professor Wong is a Council Member and Chairman of the Membership Committee of the International Living Donor Liver Transplant (iLDLT) group, a Workgroup Leader in the ILTS-iLDLT international consensus statement on living donor safety, and a member of the Scientific Committee of the International LDLT Registry (LDLTregistry.org). She served as Deputy Secretary General of the International Society for Digestive Surgery Asian Pacific and is Honorary Secretary of the Hong Kong Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.
